If you followed me back when I was OAK + PINE blog then you know I’m a huge supporter of local businesses, entrepreneurs, and people following their dreams. As part of my blog it’s important for me to share with you companies that I love and support whole heartily. Today I’m talking to you about Wooden Ships, a family owned business based in Australia, who I LOVE for multiple reasons.
The founders are Colombian-born designer Paola Buendía and her husband, Mark Donovan. They met as undergraduates at Harvard. Spurred by a four-month backpacking trip to Bali, they founded Wooden Ships in NYC in 1992, two years after graduation. So basically, they’re living my dream life.
They create their knits with a no-waste approach, all pieces are made-to-order – no stock! Rather than order stock on things we “might” sell, the factory produces one Sales Order at a time. There is no wasted time or raw materials on wrong inventory so we can give our customers incredible turn around time. I received my sweater within four days of ordering it! I was extremely impressed by the quality of the Wooden Ship Knits. Often times I find knits to be itchy or uncomfortable but the Memorial Day Wooden Ship Knit I received was extremely cozy and lightweight – perfect for spring, summer, and fall! The knits also have a touchiness that makes them instantly casual – this is so MY STYLE as I love a nice little off the shoulder look.
Inspired by their travels, the Wooden Ships family gives back to the world by donating to important causes like EarthJustice, Sea Shepherd International, Avaaz, Organic Consumers Organization, International Anti-Poaching Foundation, the Environmental Defense Fund, International Rescue Committee, Naral and WildAid. They also donated to a program that helped protect 700 of the world’s last remaining endangered Bornean Orangutans! #savetheorangutans
I continue to be impressed by the Wooden Ship brand and the quality of their products. They focus on a no-waste approach, and choose eco-friendly materials for their products and packaging. Our generation needs more companies like this! If you want to read more about their beautiful story then CICK HERE.
